Overview

Microsoft have added several new security related features in recent versions of Windows, some of which mean that applications such as QM that have run successfully on previous versions of Windows for many years now fail. This article summarises issues reported by QM users. Further contributions are welcome.

User Account Control (UAC)

This feature, present in Vista and Windows 2008, is intended to limit the capabilities of application software unless authorised by a system administrator.

One impact of UAC appears to be that the Windows process started to handle use of the SH command or the QMBasic OS.EXECUTE statement runs without the PATH environment set up. The implication of this is that the command being executed will fail unless the full pathname of the executable is provided.

The degree of restriction imposed by the UAC can be configured via the User Accounts option of the Windows Control Panel.
